“…..Everything you create could be art, and it can make beautiful things if you believe and create that is as unique as you are.”
Art is a form of escape from the everyday mundane. It washes off dust from everyday life and is a testament to the power of human creativity and imagination. The things art can do for the human race is boundless. Art can transcend language and cultural barriers. It can evoke universal emotions and allows an individual to express and convey their thoughts, feelings, and perspective to the world. Artistic creations mirror the reflection of human nature, capturing beauty, bliss, and miseries.
Quilling art is one such versatile and captivating form of art that involves the transformation of simple paper stripes into intricate stunning designs. These papers are then glued together using various adhesives. Quilling is also known as ‘Filigree’ or filligrana or paper roll.
In this piece, we are delighted to introduce this amazing quiller from Nagaland to our readers. Let’s delve more into her realm of art!
Born and raised in Mokokchung, Linuksangla Jamir is a 26-year-old self-taught passionate Quilling artist. With a Master of commerce degree, she now works as a teacher. This talented quiller launched her quilling business @sangquillingcreations in the year 2021 and has since been producing astonishing artwork for her clients. She creates frames, and embellishments for wedding receptions, and gifts
The art form was introduced to her naturally when she stumbled upon quilling while surfing the internet.
“I am a self-taught Quiller” – Linuksangla Jamir
For the young quiller, art means
“An expression of emotions and creativity in different form. [It is] A creative process that gives meaning to itself.” –
Despite having numerous quilling tools for the creation of various artworks and designs such as slotted tools, rulers, tweezers and needles, etc, the skilled quiller prefers to use their fingers instead to shape the papers on their will and bend it to the sway of their imagination.
The creative process initiates by first doing a colour study and the kinds of patterns to be used. Jamir also added that choosing the right colour and pattern for the art plays an important role in making a piece stunning.
“Having a clear picture of how I want my work to be, I start creating my work.”- Linuksangla Jamir
As any other artist, she finds inspiration from other quilling artists and other sources which serves as an impetus in motivating her to create amazing works.
The young artist looks up to Yulia Brodskaya, one of the best paper-quilling artists in the world.
“I love the intricate details of her art that form the whole picture and make it so fascinating to look at, though my approach to making my artwork is different from hers.” -Linuksangla Jamir Commented.
Almost 95% of her projects are custom made and the clients often have a general idea of what they want and she takes inspiration from it. The artist assumes a colossal role as a channel in bringing those ideas into reality with her skills and craftsmanship.
For the artist, the most challenging aspect of quilling is the need for concentration and patience as according to Jamir, “it calls for a lot of patience to create an art” and we couldn’t agree more!
She further adds, “I enjoy the process of creating and the challenges of each one of the works. It is a difficult process but on the other hand, it gives enormous satisfaction after finishing the whole artwork.”
To overcome the challenges of quilling art, this skilled quiller takes a step back and pauses every time her art does not seem to work.
“I have learned to zen through it, keep focused and it always comes together”- Linuksangla Jamir
According to the young artist, the fact that ‘A piece of paper can transform into art’ in itself is special about this handicraft-themed art form, and confess that she strives to embody the qualities of hard work, determination, and consistency in her works.
” There is no perfect recipe that defines a great artist. But if I must say, it is just a matter of hard work, determination, and consistency. (And) I strive to embody those qualities into my artwork by competing with my limitations” – added the young artist.
The quiller thinks that art has a lot of power and that it can bring out the best in people. A noteworthy piece of advice she would give to other aspiring Quilling artists goes,
“I’d advise and encourage the aspiring quillers to go for it and keep creating. Though not as a full-time working artist, I know I’ll continue to create in the future. Everything you create could be art, and it can make beautiful things if you believe and create that is as unique as you are.”
Among many other art forms, the artist opines that Quilling is not a wildly practiced craft in Nagaland and so most people are not aware of the art of quilling. Therefore, to popularize the art form, she wants to put forth the suggestion that we need a platform that creates a stage to showcase it.
A message the talent wishes to convey to our readers is,
“Paper is a powerful tool in creativity and I want the readers to become more familiar with and appreciate the art of quilling. I also want to thank those who have been supporting and appreciating my work and those who are new and want to know more about my creations, you can find @sangquillingcreations on Instagram and/or even purchase custom-designed artwork. I hope more people will appreciate and have access to my art.”
