Jungshi Walling the owner of Block2takeout, hails from Mokokchung, Nagaland and he introduces himself as a 22 year old Entrepreneur. He maneuvers through the entrepreneurial journey with resilience and is truly one of a kind.
Walling after completing a 3 months crash course in Hospitality Management at Emporium Institute, Dimapur, got placement at the Oberoi Vanyavitas, Rajasthan where he worked for 7 months. However, he had to return home due to Covid-19 and family obligations.
Jungshi naturally introduced himself to the food business after stumbling upon an article through Eastern Mirror.
“While working in Rajasthan, I read an article through eastern mirror of Vemele Dawhuo who opened ‘Le Bistro Kohima’ in the midst of lockdown. And him being a young entrepreneur, I wanted to become like him.” – Jungshi walling
The young entrepreneur chose to run this Korean cuisine restaurant after going through a market survey since there was almost none that run an outlet expertise in these food items. This was rare in town amid everyone having a thing for Korean foods.
Financial constraint was among the colossal challenges faced by Walling as he ventured into the realm of Entrepreneurship/ start up. The most challenging question thrown at him was, ‘how to start up a business with no income or savings?’
“For some time, I thought of giving up since no one was ready to support me on my journey except for my sister, my best friend. Only because of their support and encouragement I can now say that I am a business person.”
“I went to every agencies, banks and Government employees (for guarantee) however, each one denied since I had no savings and statements to provide.”- Jungshi Walling
The last string of hope for him was to approach The Entrepreneur Associates (tEA), Nagaland through Instagram for financial help. Initially, he was skeptical and he approached the organization without much hope. But they understood his plight and offered a helping hand for which he wishes to convey his gratitude to the organization.
“ tEA was the only organization that understood my struggles and efforts and helped me out. Thank you Entrepreneur associates for believing in me and giving me a chance to achieve my dream.”- Walling
Along with him, the restaurant employs two staffs – a chef and a part time service Assistant. Walling himself is a chef and also does all the managerial work simultaneously.
With numerous exorbitant dishes already prevailing in the market, he intends to list the menu pricing comparatively more affordable so that people can relish on a variety of cuisines other than the conventional ones.
“Our restaurant specializes in Korean cuisines like Kimbap, tteokbokki, bibimbap, noodles, kimchi and so on, but other than that, we do serve continental and other asian cuisines as well.”- Jungshi Walling
Walling also added that he enjoys cooking all the dishes without discriminating one from the other. A true Chef indeed!
“The most popular dish among our customers is bibimbap. It is a mixture of vegetables, rice and sauce.”
One marketing tactic employed by the restaurant is updating their menu set at least 3 times a year, provide offers every month and on days of festivities, Happy Hours, everyday discount for students in Uniform and introduce new dish in the menu so that it doesn’t bore the customers with the same menu.
A business owner should be passionate as in the words of the young entrepreneur,
“To have a passion in what you’re doing in itself is success. Not just for the sake of money, doesn’t matter what type of work or job, money will come and go. But if you enjoy what you’re doing, it’ll make a life- it’ll make you successful.”
Having a positive mindset and open to feedback is the key to flourish a food business.
“In our menu, Bibimbap was the least favourite dish among the customers. However, owing to the customer’s valuable feedbacks, I was able to study and give more attention in preparing the menu and now it has become the favourite and the most selling item in our menu.”
One advice he would give to someone who wishes to run a food business is,
“Plan out what people will enjoy. And know the market. For example, if you want to open a dumpling restaurant, and already a lot of restaurants are selling those, try to come up with a different idea like a soup dumpling or giant dumpling. Maybe that’ll attract more people.”
Jungshi Walling opines that the best part about being an entrepreneur is the freedom that comes with it.
“I have my own time and that I don’t have to work under someone else.”
Apart from running a business, Walling also enjoys singing and wishes to become a Genie so as to help eradicate hunger in the world.
“If I am to choose a superpower, I would love to be a genie. Why because, I have seen a lot of people wishing to have a nice meal or a bowl of rice in a day. I want to make their wish come true and keep them fed so that they will be thankful to have another beautiful day.”- Jungshi Walling
