Introducing ALEM PONGEN and IMLILA, the two pillars and roots of Naga’s authentic traditional business owners S. Imlila (Otsu) and Alem Pongen (Oppu) who have been running the “Traditional Handicrafts” shop located in Supermarket, Dimapur, Nagaland since 1988. Their shop was the first ever traditional handicrafts and Handloom shop opened in the supermarket area and has been running the business for more than 34 years now. The management of the shop requires a lot of helping hands according to Otsu hence, they keep young helpers at bay everyday. These two cultured and skilled artisans, at younger age, have travelled across the nation like Jorhat, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Delhi, Madras (Chennai), Bombay (Mumbai) and various other parts of North East India selling their handicrafts and traditional attires. According to Otsu, it was more profitable selling these artworks to other parts of the country as Wooden and bamboo crafts are not abundant in big cities as they are already old they can’t travel now. Oppu is 80 while Otsu is 76 years old now. Oppu is said to have slight difficulty in hearing however both are still fit, healthy and managing the business very well.
