Kepeihei Kamlak also known as Kepe is an emerging fashion designer belonging to Zeliang community from Nagaland. She is a graduate and the eldest in her family, she has a younger sister and two younger brothers. With an unyiеlding passion for dеsign and an unwavеring commitmеnt to hеr vision, she works to create pieces that can leave a lasting impression for the people.
Kepe always had a keen interest in stitching since her college days. Her dad used to have a hand sewing machine with which he used to repair our clothes. A fond memory of her is that it was her father that taught her how to use the machine. He still helps clean and oil the machine since it has grown old. She still has the machine which has been upgraded to foot machine and it is still running smoothly and serving well in her work. After her graduation in the year 2015, she tried appearing few competitive exams however it was fruitless. So, she took up cutting and tailoring course as well as fashion designing course for 3 and 6 respectively months in the year 2016-17. She passed the course securing first place which came to be as a great surprise for her as she never achieved such position in her academic days. All the more reason she felt blessed and rewarded.
After completing her fashion designing course, Kepe embarked on a journey of self-discovery, honing her skills and finding her creative voice. The initial stage was not without challenges. The early days were filled with sleepless night and tight budgets. Tenacity and belief in her talent drove her to persevere and refine her craft, taking every setback as a stepping stone to success. She also thanked and gave glory to God for guiding and helping her throughout her journey.
Her clothing label KP apparel studio is her name itself. Her loved ones call her Kepe so, she came up with the name K & P for her clothing brand in the year 2019. Apart from taking orders and sewing, an amazing contribution from her is that she gives basic crash course on cutting and tailoring. Currently, she has a home studio which is located at East block Burma camp, Dimapur Nagaland.
When asked what is the main objective and unique about her clothing brand, she said that her brand focuses on comfort, durability minimal look. According to Kepe, in this advancing modern generation, fashion is one important part of our life. Clothes define who you are and your personality. She mentioned. “I personally being a clothes lover and always have interest in sewing, at first, I took up the training for my own benefit, but gradually friends and families got to know my work and started to place orders. My focus is working on occasional wears(formals).” Currently she has a team working on customised tote bags. They all work with passion and tirelessly which she considers it as a blessing.
Moving forward, Kepe has also collaborated in some projects and contributed in shows, she has:
- Worked as a domain trainer at SRK people’s consultant under DDU-GKY for a period of 1 year.
- Worked as a trainer at the IWSN training institute for a year.
- Participated in IWSN training institute annual designers gala fashion show in 2018.
- Organised a fashion show in Peren with the theme ‘Dressing a Better World’ in 2019.
- Participated at IWSN annual designers gala fashion show in 2019.
- SATHINI resort wear project in collaboration with other designers in 2021.
- Participated in fashion show cum seminar on mental health organised by Miss northeast India 2021.
- In the month of July 2023, she did a collaboration project with the prestigious college of Dimapur- Unity college on casual wear collection for their Mr. and Ms fresher.
So far, her family, friends, clients and loved ones admire and love her work and she consider that as the success of her business. She said, “The best part of having a business is knowing that you can possibly make someone’s day a little brighter with what you are doing.” Whеther a client sееks a dress for special event or a tote bag, the team is thеrе to turn their fashion ideas and drеams into a rеality. Thеir commitmеnt to building lasting rеlationships with customеrs еnsurеs an еxpеriеncе that goеs bеyond mеrе transactions.
As a young, sеlf-madе dеsignеr, shе sеrvеs as a hopе for aspiring talеnts. She еncouragеs othеrs to pursuе thеir drеams fеarlеssly and еmbracе thеir crеativе passions, no mattеr thе circumstancеs.
