About the artist

Hi, my name is Tetsong Jamir and I’m a freelance contemporary artist from Dimapur, Nagaland. I studied and graduated in fashion and graphic design from Accademia Italiana in Bangkok, Thailand. After working there for four years for various magazine and film companies, I moved to Tokyo and studied traditional Japanese water-color painting.

My interest in art started from a very young age and I was self-taught because there weren’t any good art teachers around where I lived. I always took art as a hobby and never really knew that I could make a career out of it. I always wanted to get into a creative field and I knew that’s where I would be happy. My parents were very supportive when I told them that I want to get into art and design after my 12th standard. And that’s how my art journey began.

Art for me has been a therapeutic journey through the ups and downs of my life and has saved me in so many ways. Creating something with your own hands, painting a piece of your imagination on a piece of paper can be quite liberating. Knowing that you and only you could create something which nobody has seen before gives you a sense of gratitude, accomplishment and pride. In the future, I would love to open a design studio in Nagaland where creative minds would join together and work on projects, be it fashion design, graphic design or interior design. There are so many talented Naga artists and I would like to build a platform for every one of us to flourish.

In the past I have worked for Major Lazer on their music video “Night riders“, I’ve also worked with several magazines and fashion companies like Vogue, Travel and Leisure, Asava, Harper’s Bazaar etc

Currently, I’m working from home. I work on different projects, digital as well as freehand. I recently designed the official kit for Nagaland athletics specifically for the Naga team. You can find my work on Instagram @tetsongartanddesign. I am in the process of making a website for my art but for now, I take commission orders from my social media.

What I want people to take away from this is that as artists we spend countless hours and years to practice on our skills, studying design and art is also very expensive. What you buy from an artist is his/her skill that has been crafted for years, probably even spent a fortune to perfect that skill. Artists should be celebrated in our society just as a doctor or a nurse or a teacher. Imagine a world without art, how boring would that be?
